Is this the same algorithm as Google Authenticator?

Should I use this for my real production 2FA secret?

For testing and development, this is convenient. For an account's actual production 2FA secret, a dedicated authenticator app is the safer long-term choice since it is not exposed in a browser tab.

Why did my code not match?

TOTP codes depend on synchronized clocks — check that your device's system time is accurate, since even a small clock drift produces a different code.
