Round Robin Schedule Generator — Fair League & Tournament Fixtures
Paste your teams or players and get a complete round robin schedule: every pair meets exactly once (or twice, home and away), nobody is double-booked, and with an odd number of entrants each one sits out exactly one round. Games are split across however many courts or fields you have, each round gets a date if you set a start day, and the whole schedule copies out as CSV. It also does something most generators skip: it balances venues so teams alternate home and away as much as mathematically possible. De Werra proved in 1981 that a single round robin of n teams needs at least n − 2 back-to-back home or away games when n is even, and none when n is odd — this schedule hits exactly those minimums, which we verified for every size from 3 to 20 teams.
How to use Round Robin Schedule Generator — Fewest Back-to-Back Home Games
- Paste your teams or players, one per line.
- Choose single round robin, or double for home-and-away legs.
- Optionally set how many courts or fields you have, a start date and the days between rounds.
- Highlight any team to check its fixtures and venue sequence, then copy the schedule as CSV.
Frequently asked questions
- How many rounds and games will there be?
- With n teams, a single round robin has n(n−1)/2 games. An even number of teams needs n−1 rounds; an odd number needs n rounds because one team sits out each round. A double round robin doubles both.
- How are byes handled with an odd number of teams?
- A placeholder is added and whoever is drawn against it sits out that round. The rotation guarantees each team gets exactly one bye, so nobody is disadvantaged by sitting out twice.
- What is a "break" and why does it matter?
- A break is a team playing two home games, or two away games, in consecutive rounds. Too many breaks is unfair travel-wise and gives some teams runs of home advantage. With an even number of teams at least n − 2 breaks are unavoidable; this generator produces exactly that minimum, and with an odd number of teams it produces none — every team strictly alternates.
- What if I have fewer courts than games in a round?
- Enter the number of courts or fields and each round is split into consecutive time slots, with each game given a slot and a court number. Nothing is dropped or doubled up.
- Can I randomise who plays whom first?
- Yes. "Randomise the draw" shuffles the team order using your browser’s cryptographic random source before building the schedule. The fairness guarantees — everyone meets once, byes spread, minimum breaks — still hold for every shuffle.
- Does it work for individual players, like a chess or table-tennis round robin?
- Yes — just enter player names. In chess, read "home" as playing the white pieces; the same balancing then gives each player as even a split of white and black as possible.
