Huffman Coding Visualizer — Real Tree, Real Compression, No AI

Paste any text to see a genuine Huffman tree built from its actual character frequencies — the same greedy tree-merging algorithm real compressors like DEFLATE and JPEG use internally — with true prefix-free binary codes assigned per character and the exact compressed bit count computed, not a canned demo number.

How to use Huffman Coding Visualizer

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. Read the frequency-sorted code table.
  3. Compare the Huffman-encoded bit count against the fixed 8-bit baseline.
  4. Try very repetitive vs. very uniform text to see compression vary.

Frequently asked questions

Why do frequent characters get shorter codes?
The algorithm repeatedly merges the two lowest-frequency nodes into a parent, so the most frequent character ends up closest to the tree root — fewest branches to walk, shortest code — while rare characters end up deep in the tree with longer codes.
What does "prefix-free" mean and why does it matter?
No complete code in the table is ever the start of another code — that property is exactly what lets a decoder read the bitstream one symbol at a time with zero delimiters between codes, which is what makes Huffman coding practical.
Is this a real algorithm or a visual approximation?
Real — the actual greedy min-heap merging algorithm runs on your text's real character frequencies, producing genuinely valid, round-trip-decodable prefix codes, not a stylized animation standing in for the math.
Why does very uniform text compress poorly?
Huffman coding exploits skewed frequency distributions — when every character appears equally often, there is no frequency advantage to exploit, so codes end up close to the same length as a fixed-width encoding.
